Emerging Companies

An emerging company in the pharmaceutical industry is Gilead Sciences. Gilead is a research based biotechnology company that was formed in 1987 in Foster City, California. Their mission is to discover, develop and commercialize medications to help the care of patients suffering from life threatening diseases. Their main focus for the past couple of years has been HIV/AIDS, liver disease and serious cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. In 2010, Gilead’s annual revenues reached nearly $8 million and in BusinessWeek they were ranked in the top50 for “Best Performing Company”. The cure and treatment of life-threatening diseases is a high priority for the medical community. Even though there is extensive research and a lot of money invested, successes are few and new, effective medications are rare. Gilead is an emerging company in this important field because of the high demand for drugs that will provide cures for life threatening
diseases.
Also emerging in the pharmaceutical industry is Oncomed Pharmaceuticals. Oncomed Pharmaceuticals is a biotechnology company dedicated to improving cancer treatment by developing monoclonal antibodies that target cancer stem cells. It was founded in August of 2004 by Dr. Michael Clarke and Dr. Max Wicha. Cancer is a disease that affects all families to some extent. Each year thousands of lives are lost to this awful disease. There is a great deal of research done each year in the hope of one day finding a cure for cancer. Finding this cure is one of the great challenges to the pharmaceutical research industry and Oncomed is an emerging company in that search because of its work in identifying improved, more effective methods to treat cancer.

One of the greatest challenges facing the medical community is to identify ways to extend life in the face of life threatening diseases. Each year precious lives are lost to serious disease and millions of dollars are spent in the treatment of these life threatening diseases. The race to find
cures is important to the world to reduce suffering and save the lives of many people, many in the prime of their lives. Curing these diseases also would allow the enormous amount of money spent on research and their treatment to be used to satisfy other needs, such as education, infrastructure improvement, and the like. Companies such as Gilead Sciences and Oncomed Pharmaceuticals are promising organizations in this fight to identify cures for disease and thereby improve the quality of life for everyone.

  1. Which of those two organizations looks stronger to you, Meredith? They both seem to fight for essentially the same cause, so I'd like your opinion on which you think is accomplishing their goals.
